Hiking Mountain Rwenzori and trekking Gorillas gives you exceptional adventure experiences as you get to the highest peak Margherita ( (16,761 feet) above sea level) as well as trek the Gorillas in their natural forest vegetation habitat at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Rwenzori Mountains

Margherita Peak ClimbThe Rwenzori Mountains also known as the “Mountains of the Moon,” are a dramatic and rugged mountain range situated along the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The Rwenzori Mountains are renowned for their dramatic terrain landscapes that have glaciers, waterfalls, dense forests and alpine meadows as well as flora and fauna.

Trekking the Rwenzori Mountains

A trek along Mountain Rwenzori is physically demanding but very rewarding as you follow  through steep terrain, changing weather conditions and high altitude viewing unique ecosystems, tropical rainforest to alpine vegetation and wildlife native to the region.

The trek usually lasts between 7 to 9 days depending on the route and your physical fitness level. The routes used to get to the summit are the Kilembe Trekking Route and the Central Circuit Route.

Overview of the Rwenzori Trek

  1. Tropical Rainforest: The lower sections of the trek pass through dense rainforest, home to various species of birds, monkeys, and unique plant life. As you hike, you’ll encounter giant ferns, moss-covered trees, and numerous waterfalls.

  2. Alpine Meadows & Moorland: As you ascend, the forest gives way to alpine meadows, where giant lobelias and groundsel plants dominate the landscape. The higher you go, the more surreal and beautiful the surroundings become.

  3. Glaciers & Snow-capped Peaks: Near the summit, the Rwenzori Mountains offer breathtaking views of glaciers and snow-covered peaks. Mount Margherita’s glacier is one of the few remaining glaciers in Africa, making it a rare and striking sight.

  4. Wildlife: While trekking, you might encounter species like the Rwenzori colobus monkey, golden monkeys, and various birds such as the Rwenzori turaco. The region is also home to forest elephants, though sightings are rare.

  5. Mountain Lakes: The trek passes several beautiful mountain lakes, such as Lake Kitandara and Lake Mahoma, which are stunningly picturesque and serene, adding to the magic of the journey.

  6. Summit Views: The final push to Mount Margherita offers a challenging climb but rewards trekkers with an incredible panoramic view of the surrounding ranges, valleys, and glaciers.

What to Expect on the Rwenzori Trek

  • Physical Challenge: The trek is considered difficult due to the steep terrain, high altitudes, and unpredictable weather conditions. You should be prepared for long, strenuous days of hiking, with some sections requiring basic scrambling over rocks.

  • Weather: The weather in the Rwenzori Mountains is highly unpredictable. Rain is common, and temperatures can vary greatly depending on the altitude. At lower altitudes, it can be warm and humid, while at higher altitudes, it can be cold and snowy. Proper gear, including waterproof clothing and layers for warmth, is essential.

  • Acclimatization: Due to the high altitude, proper acclimatization is crucial to avoid altitude sickness. Most treks are designed to allow for gradual ascents to give your body time to adjust to the thinner air.

  • Guides and Porters: The trek is best done with the assistance of experienced guides and porters who are familiar with the terrain. They will ensure your safety, assist with navigation, and carry supplies, allowing you to focus on the trek itself.

Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

The Magic of Mountain Gorillas

Gorilla TrekkingMountain gorillas are one of the most endangered species on the planet, with only about 1,000 individuals remaining in the wild. These magnificent creatures are found in only three countries Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in southwestern Uganda is home to a significant portion of the world’s mountain gorilla population and is a prime location for gorilla trekking.

The forest is a lush, tropical rainforest that provides an ideal habitat for the mountain gorillas, as well as other wildlife such as forest elephants, chimpanzees, and a variety of bird species.

Gorilla Trekking Experience

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is an awe-inspiring, once-in-a-lifetime experience. It involves hiking through thick jungle to reach habituated gorilla families, where you’ll have the opportunity to observe them in their natural habitat. The trek usually lasts between 2 to 6 hours, depending on the location of the gorillas on the day of your trek.

Each trek is led by a trained guide and armed park rangers who ensure the safety of both the trekkers and the gorillas. Once you reach the gorillas, you will spend up to one hour with them, observing their behavior, social interactions, and daily activities. It’s an intimate, awe-striking moment as you come face-to-face with these gentle giants.

What to Expect During Gorilla Trekking

  1. Hiking Through Dense Forest: The trek to find the gorillas involves walking through dense vegetation, steep hills, and sometimes muddy paths. The trek can be physically demanding, but the reward of seeing the gorillas is well worth the effort.

  2. Gorilla Behavior: Watching the gorillas interact with one another is an unforgettable experience. You might witness playful young gorillas, mothers caring for their infants, or dominant silverbacks leading the group. The gorillas’ intelligence and emotional depth are truly remarkable.

  3. Group Size: Uganda limits the number of trekkers per day to protect the gorillas from human disease and to minimize disturbance. Groups are typically small, ensuring an intimate and meaningful experience.

  4. Safety and Guidelines: Strict guidelines are in place to ensure the safety of both the gorillas and the trekkers. You must maintain a distance of at least 7 meters (21 feet) from the gorillas, and no one with a cold or illness is allowed to trek to prevent the transmission of diseases to the gorillas.

  5. Permits: Gorilla trekking permits are in high demand and must be booked in advance. These permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and allow a maximum of 8 visitors per gorilla group per day.
